European Tennis Data & Infrastructure Statistics

This page serves as the official TennisDex data hub, indexing all datasets related to European tennis infrastructure, access, and development. Datasets are compiled using public data, federation reports, and TennisDex analysis. All data undergoes annual review with full methodology transparency.

About TennisDex Data

Understanding what our data measures, its limitations, and why our methodology matters

What TennisDex Measures

  • Publicly accessible tennis courts - Courts available at clubs, academies, municipal facilities, and public parks
  • Indoor and outdoor facility distribution - The split between covered and open-air courts across different climates
  • Per-capita infrastructure density - Court availability normalized by population for fair cross-country comparison
  • Federation-reported infrastructure - Official data from national tennis associations where available

What TennisDex Does NOT Measure

  • Private residential courts - Courts on private property (estates, homes) are excluded from all counts
  • Temporary or seasonal installations - Pop-up courts and seasonal bubble structures are not included in baseline figures
  • Court quality or condition - We count facilities, not their maintenance state or playing surface quality
  • Real-time availability - Data reflects infrastructure existence, not current booking status or accessibility

Why Ranges Are Used

Tennis infrastructure data is inherently imprecise. We use ranges (e.g., 165,000 - 195,000) rather than single figures because:

  • Incomplete reporting - Not all countries have centralized court registries or recent census data
  • Methodological differences - Federations count facilities differently (some include multi-use courts, others do not)
  • Data currency - Source data ages vary from 1-5 years across different countries
  • Intellectual honesty - Presenting false precision would undermine trust; ranges communicate genuine uncertainty

Why Europe-Wide Aggregation Matters

Tennis is increasingly a cross-border sport in Europe. Aggregated data serves critical purposes:

  • Policy benchmarking - Federations and sports ministries can compare infrastructure investment across peer nations
  • Training destination planning - Players and academies can identify regions with optimal facility density and climate combinations
  • Investment analysis - Identifying underserved markets for new academy development or facility construction
  • Research foundation - Providing baseline data for academic studies on sports access, equity, and development

Methodology Overview

TennisDex datasets are compiled from multiple authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness:

Data Sources

  • National tennis federations
  • Public sports infrastructure datasets
  • OpenStreetMap court mapping
  • TennisDex academy and club database

Data Handling

  • Combination of reported data and estimates
  • Use of ranges instead of exact figures where appropriate
  • Full methodology transparency on each dataset page

Data Principles

  • Data is presented as ranges where appropriate to reflect uncertainty
  • Reported and estimated data are clearly labeled in all tables
  • Methodology is consistent across datasets for comparability
  • Data is reviewed and updated annually
  • Designed for citation and reuse by researchers and journalists

Citation & Usage

All TennisDex datasets may be cited with attribution to TennisDex. Individual dataset pages include suggested citation formats for academic and journalistic use.

Update & Versioning Policy

  • Annual Review Cycle: All datasets are reviewed and updated at minimum once per calendar year
  • Methodology Versioning: Changes to calculation methods are tracked with version numbers (e.g., v1.0, v1.1)
  • Historical Archiving: Previous dataset versions will be archived for reference (planned)
